December 2014

Dear Colleagues,

Greetings from your focus group officers. In this newsletter:

  1. Welcome new SEDI officers
  2. AGU Fall Meeting Announcements
  3. Consider nominations for next years SEDI Graduate Research
  4. Consider supporting SEDI through donations

Please welcome our new officers: Allen McNamara as President-elect and Laurent Montesi as Secretary

The results of the new election for officers are final, and we will be seeing some changes in the makeup of the SEDI focus group leadership as of January, 2015. Sabine Stanley of the University of Toronto will become the new President of the focus group, while Allen McNamara of Arizona State University will become President-elect and Laurent Montesi of the University of Maryland will become our new Secretary.

We greatly thank our other candidates for the elected positions, and encourage everyone to get involved both in future elections, as well as the many volunteer opportunities that are available between the election cycles!

AGU Fall Meeting 2014 announcements

Please check out the 26 oral and poster sessions that have SEDI as a primary sponsor (and remember it’s abbreviated DI in session titles). A full list can be found at the meeting’s scientific program site (https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm14/meetingapp.cgi#Program/1024). The even larger number of co-sponsored session from this interdisciplinary focus group can be found at https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm14/meetingapp.cgi#CoSponsor/16

Also don’t forget to come to the joint SEDI/MRP reception on Tuesday night from 6:30-8 pm. In a change from previous years, the reception will be at the Grand Hyatt (in the Fillmore ABC room) instead of the Marriott. A map to the Grand Hyatt can be found here (http://goo.gl/sD5dUT)

Consider nominations for next year’s SEDI Graduate Research Award

As was announced earlier this year, Andrew Schaeffer won our inaugural Graduate Research award. He was selected from an excellent pool of nominees. We’d like to expand on that success, and have another excellent pool this year, so I encourage all of you to consider nominations for the award.

Eligibility details are available at http://honors.agu.org/scientific-contribution/study-of-the-earths-deep-interior/

Donate to SEDI

SEDI continues to need your help! We’d like to request everyone with SEDI as a primary or secondary affiliation to consider donating to the focus group. In order to support the awards we’d like to make for our community, including the new Graduate Research Award and the Outstanding Student Paper Awards at the fall meeting, we need donations specifically earmarked for SEDI. AGU does not give us any direct budget, and if we would like to continue offering these awards, we need your support. Please also consider making SEDI your primary affiliation if you haven’t already.

To donate to the SEDI focus group:

  • Visit the AGU website
  • Under the “Other Donation Fund” section, click the drop-down box
  • Select “Study of the Earth’s Deep Interior Fund” and enter the donation amount in the “Dollar Amount” box
  • Enter your email address and password
  • Click the “Next Step” button and follow the instructions
