• Subduction Zone Observatory Workshop
    Please consider applying to attend the NSF-sponsored Subduction Zone Observatory Workshop, to be held in Boise, Idaho from Wednesday, 9/28 until Friday, 9/30. The workshop seeks a broad range of applicants interested in discussing the scientific motivations for an interdisciplinary earth, ocean, and atmospheric research program focused around the scientific questions and societal hazards related to subduction zones. Applicants will be selected by the organizing committee and notified of their application status no later than July 1st.On-site support is available for selected applicants, and limited travel support will be available for selected early career scientists and other applicants. International and early career scientists are especially encouraged to apply.

  • CIDER 2016 Summer program
    (From the website): Geological activity, such as mountain building and volcanism, is ultimately the consequence of the convective mass transport in the Earth’s interior. Indeed, the grand unifying theory in geophysics and Earth science—plate tectonics—fundamentally depends on the still poorly understood mechanisms that permit the Earth’s interior to flow beneath tectonic plates. Deciphering the three-dimensional structure and time dependence of this flow provides a framework for unraveling the complex, nonlinear interplay of processes that shaped the long-term evolution of Earth. The purpose of CIDER 2016 is to bring together junior and senior scientists from different disciplines to cross-educate each other and help advance this inherently multi-disciplinary question.

  • SEDI 2016 (every even year)
    (From the website): The 15th Symposium of SEDI, Study of the Earth’s Deep Interior, a Committee of IUGG, will be held in Nantes, France, from July 24th to 29th, 2016.The meeting will take place at La Cité Nantes Events Center, which is located downtown in Nantes, near the Loire River. The Laboratoire de Planétologie et Géodynamique is in charge of the local organization.

    SEDI is an international scientific organization dedicated to the Study of the Earth’s Deep Interior. The ultimate goal of SEDI is an enhanced understanding of the past evolution and current thermal, dynamical and chemical state of the Earth’s deep interior and of the effect that the interior has on the structures and processes observed at the surface of the Earth. The ‘deep interior’ is generally considered to be the core and lower mantle, but interest may extend to the surface, for example, in the study of mantle plumes or dynamics of descending lithospheric slabs.

    The scientific questions and problems of interest to SEDI include the geomagnetic dynamo and secular variation, paleomagnetism and the evolution of the Earth’s deep interior, composition, structure and dynamics of the outer core, dynamo energetics, structure of the inner core, core cooling and the core-mantle boundary region, core-mantle boundary shape, coupling and the rotation of the Earth, lower mantle: structure, convection and plumes, nature and location of deep geochemical reservoirs, etc.

  • Gordon Research Seminar- Interior of the Earth (every odd year)
    The Gordon Research Seminar on Interior of the Earth is a unique forum for graduate students, post-docs, and other scientists with comparable levels of experience and education to present and exchange new data and cutting edge ideas. Participation is expected to be broad, and includes (but is not limited to) those working in the fields of seismology, geochemistry, geodynamics, geomagnetism, mantle petrology, and mineral physics. The GRS is run prior to the Gordon Research Conference – Interior of the Earth.
